Fist Full of Colors


I finished the first run through of samples; they are all spun, plied and set. It was a lot of fun, and interesting to see how many colors you could come up with when starting with three base colors. However, out of the 12 colors in this combination, there are only a few that I think I will actually use in the Fair Isle sock project


My three favorites are the two that are a mix of terra cotta and yellow, and the mix of magenta and purple. I think the magenta mixed with yellow and turquoise just doesn’t work well. I like the bright greens I get from yellow and turquoise, but they aren’t for this project, I don’t think. I guess I’ll see when I get closer to actually charting out the project. That bright green might be good for some sparkle among some darker colors.

Well, a long mystery has been solved here at my house. For months my spinner’s control card, (a nifty little Lucite rectangle, about the size of a credit card, with markings for measuring your single against so you get a consistent thickness) has been missing. I have looked and looked for it, tearing apart and sorting out the wool bins, looking under furniture, etc. Well, starting this project, I either needed to find it, or at least mock up a new one on the computer with black lines so that I would have something to measure against. I don’t want to end up with half the yarns for my sock fingering weight and the other half sport, which would be a disaster. Well, I finally asked the kids if they had seen it. Upon which Son #2 disappeared. And returned with said control card, a knot in it’s cord and rusty. He “found” it in the air-conditioning vent. Gee, I wonder how it got down there? I guess that part will remain a mystery, as every small person in this house swears they had nothing to do with it. Oh well, still useable. I cut off the cord, and washed the dirt and rust off. Then my daughter brought me a new cord she had made for it. It is very pretty, and since the cord is elastic, I can still stretch it over to measure my single.
